NEEDLESS TO SAY, BRODY AND I HIGHTAILED IT OUT OF THE TEXAS PANHANDLE and didn’t so much as stop at a Dairy Queen until we reached the Hill Country close to dawn. The sniper that River had taken out hadn’t been carrying any identification. I’d field stripped and packed up his rifle, taken four combat knives, two automatic pistols and three grenades. I’d debated whether whoever had sent him would just use the burner phone from the pocket of his fatigues to track us, until I’d searched further in his pockets and discovered a kill list. Apparently, River was their primary target, followed by Sofia, Cal, West and all the rest of the Caldwells. My picture was there, too. I stared at the faces of my friends. Hayden. Lacey. Rowan. Vlad. Topher. My blood ran cold. They knew where we lived. Where we worked. They even had the most recent pictures of Vlad. He’d just changed his appearance days ago. A sick feeling twisted in my stomach. We were being hunted.

The duffel also contained a padded box with six auto-injectable syringes inside. Four were labeled for werewolf use, two for vampire. Two of the werewolf syringes contained Eclipse. The other two were labeled Blackout. The vampire syringes were smaller in diameter and stored in a special container to protect them from light. They were marked simply X-1. I’d carefully packed everything away. We would need to get it all to the Council as quickly as possible for laboratory testing.

“Vlad checked in again. Everything’s quiet.”

“Any word from Yolanda?” Brody asked, eyes never leaving the road.

“Their pack has set up a round the clock watch. They’ve requested support from the Tracers.”

“Wouldn’t hold my breath with the way everyone’s stretched so thin. Wish she’d taken two seconds to think before knifing the unconscious guy out in back of the house. We could have questioned him.”

“She was scared. I would be, too, if I’d lost twenty or thirty of my people and no one was willing to step up and do a damn thing about it.”

A muscle ticked in Brody’s jaw. “I put them in danger by going there tonight. You saw that list. We were the ones they were hunting.”

I rolled my eyes. “Here we go.”

“You think I’m wrong?”

“I think you know as well as I do that her pack has been targeted from the start. They would have been in danger whether we showed up or not. It’s been two years. What has Guillermo done to stop the disappearances?”

“I could have gotten you killed.”

“I’m not some princess waiting around to be rescued. I fight my own dragons, thank you very much. Someone needs to say this to you and none of your brothers will, so it has to be me. You blame yourself for everything that has happened to your family the past three years. You’re the oldest and an Alpha, so I get that your protection instincts are dialed up to an eleven out of ten, but it kills me to watch you beat yourself up every time bad things happen that are outside your control.
